Good morning. Today is the seventh day of the year. On this day in 1896, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle advertised Sam Lockhart’s Performing Elephants at Hyde and Berhman’s music hall. The ad said the elephants had “almost human intelligence” and could “do everything but talk.” Lockhart, an Englishman, had tremendous success with his elephant act and eventually joined the Ringling Brothers circus.

Well-known people who were born today include actor David Caruso (“NYPD Blue”), TV journalist Katie Couric, singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins of Loggins & Messina, singer-pianist Paul Revere of Paul Revere and the Raiders, U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), and Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner.
