“THE ACTRESS,” by Brooklyn author Amy Sohn, will be featured tonight at 7 p.m. at BookCourt.  The event features a reading, audience Q&A, book signing and served drinks.  Additional works by Sohn include “Prospect Park West,” “Motherland” and “Run Catch Kiss.”

DUMBO COMEDY, a returning free standup comedy show, will take place tonight at Dish Dumbo from 8 to 10 p.m.  The show features Aaron Kominos-Smith and Meghan Hanley.  The event will be continuing every Tuesday and starts with live music at 8 p.m.

PILATES with the Fitness Guru will take place tonight at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Empire Fulton Ferry Lawn at 7 p.m.  The class will focus on how to properly activate abdomen and back muscles for torso stability.  These classes continue every Tuesday at 7 p.m.

ON THIS DAY in 1863, the Battle of Gettysburg began, taking place from July 1 to 3.  The Gettysburg battle is known as one of the Civil War’s most crucial and worst battles with casualty numbers at more than 50,000.

PRINCESS DIANA OF WALES was born on this day in 1961.  Diana was the former wife of Charles, Prince of Wales, and the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry.  She died in an automobile accident in 1997.

THE FIRST U.S. postage stamp was issued on this day in 1847.  The first issued stamps included a 5-cent stamp that featured a picture of Benjamin Franklin and a 10-cent stamp that featured a photo of George Washington.  Stamps had previously been issued in private postal services prior to this date.

TODAY IS THE second half of the New Year day.  This day is recognized additionally to see how the New Year’s resolutions have held up for the first six months, serving as a midyear checkpoint.

ON THIS DAY in 1900, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Hundreds Dead in Harbor Fire.”  The article focused on a massive fire in Hoboken, N.J.  The article said that about 300 to 500 people died in the fire.

“The most disastrous fire that is known in the history of local shipping broke out shortly after 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon,” the article wrote.
