Good morning. Today is the 196th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of July 15, 1901, published a feature article about vice in Coney Island and the almost complete lack of police enforcement. The reporter, walking around the area on a Sunday night, was accosted at least 10 times by “ladies of the evening,” two of whom tried to physically pull him into their so-called hotel, and once or twice by madams. At concert halls, women danced semi-naked, and at one place, men danced in drag. Although liquor was prohibited on “the Lord’s Day” at the time, beer and whiskey were sold openly almost everywhere.

Well-known people who were born today include classical musician Julian Bream, actor Terry O’Quinn, Brooklyn-born actress Lana Parilla (“Once Upon a Time”), singer-songwriter Linda Ronstadt (“Distant Drum,” “When Will I Be Loved,” “You’re No Good”), former professional wrestler and Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura and actor Forrest Whitaker (“The Last King of Scotland,” ‘Bird”).
