Good morning. Today is the 205th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of July 24, 1901 reported that the Police Department was making a renewed push for “decency” on the West End of Coney Island. Apparently the police had already made some headway. An Eagle reporter who walked around the area late at night noticed that a well-known “gambling resort” and numerous crap games weren’t operating as usual, although a fair number of “ladies of the evening” were still walking the streets.

Well-known people who were born today include comedienne-actress Ruth Buzzi (“Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-in”), former baseball player Barry Bonds, actress Kristin Chenoweth (“Wicked,”” You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”), actress and singer Jennifer Lopez (“Maid in Manhattan,” “Out of Sight”), Hall of Fame baseball player Karl Malone, actor Chris Sarandon (“Dog Day Afternoon” and musician Peter Serkin.
