Brooklyn Today: July 27, 2012

Brooklyn Daily Eagle

Good morning. Today is the 209th day of the year. Reading the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of July 27, 1901, it seems that on that date, Captain Driscoll (no first name given) of the NYPD decided to have a raid on all the “objectionable women” who were seen soliciting men in Coney Island. The result was that 75 women found themselves behind bars. However, according to the article, the “disorderly houses” themselves were not raided.

Well-known people who were born today include sportscaster and Olympic figure skater Peggy Fleming, singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry (“Ode to Billie Joe”), baseball player Alex Rodriguez and actor Jerry Van Dyke (“Coach,” “Teen Angel”).

Today at 2:30 p.m., Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R-Bay Ridge) will hold a meeting on bus and subway service at her office (which she shares with state Sen. Marty Golden), 7408 Fifth Ave. Communities in southern Brooklyn were very hard hit by the MTA’s last round of service cuts. After last week’s announcement that weekend service would be restored on the X27, Golden and Malliotakis have pledge to advocate for improved service. ... Tomorrow, this year’s Brooklyn Waterfront Epic Ride will be held from Newtown Creek to Rockaway Beach, with a rest stop at Aviator Sports at Floyd Bennett Field. The ride highlights the potential of a completed Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway and a completed Jamaica Bay Greenway. A shorter, 2.5-mile ride will begin at Aviator Sports at 10 a.m., to return at noon. ... An open tour of architecture and design studios will take place tomorrow in Red Hook. The self-guided tour, organized by The Architect’s Newspaper, gives people the opportunity to visit more than 20 studios of architects, display builders, upholsterers, metal workers, industrial designers, furniture designers and more.
