Brooklyn Today: July 27, 2012
Good morning. Today is the 209th day of the year. Reading the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of July 27, 1901, it seems that on that date, Captain Driscoll (no first name given) of the NYPD decided to have a raid on all the “objectionable women” who were seen soliciting men in Coney Island. The result was that 75 women found themselves behind bars. However, according to the article, the “disorderly houses” themselves were not raided.
Well-known people who were born today include sportscaster and Olympic figure skater Peggy Fleming, singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry (“Ode to Billie Joe”), baseball player Alex Rodriguez and actor Jerry Van Dyke (“Coach,” “Teen Angel”).
