NICHOLAS PAYTON PRESENTS BLACK AMERICAN MUSIC as part of the R&B Festival at MetroTech today at 12 p.m.  Grammy award-winning Payton is known for his clarion trumpet performances and is one of the most recognized New Orleans jazz musicians today.  

KAYAKING CLASSES CONTINUE THIS WEEK AT BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK BOATHOUSE AT THE PIER 2 DOCK TODAY AT 5:30 P.M.  Children under the age of 18 must have an adult present.  No experience is necessary.  

ONE DROP OF LOVE, a multimedia solo performance at Brooklyn Historical Society, will take place tonight at 7 p.m.  Award-winning actor, producer and educator Fanshen Cox DiGiovanni questions “how does our belief in ‘race’ affect our most intimate relationships?”  The film is produced by DiGiovanni as well as Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.  The event is co-sponsored by LovingDay.org, MixedRootStories.org and MixedRaceStudies.org. Tickets are $20/$15 for BHS members.

AI WEIWEI: ACCORDING TO WHAT? TOURS AT BROOKLYN MUSEUM will take place today at 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. outside of the 5th floor.  Ai Weiwei is a “prolific and provocative” Chinese artist who explores cultural, historical and political topics through art.  He is a photographer, sculptor, architect and activist. Tour is free today with exhibition admission.  

“I AM HAVING SO MUCH FUN HERE WITHOUT YOU” by Courtney Maum will be featured in a book launch event at The Powerhouse Arena today from 7 to 9 p.m.  The event, A Night of Show & Tell With Regret-Themed Stories, features Maum, Blaise Allysen Kearsley and Tim Manley.  Maum’s novel is set in Paris and questions whether it is possible to fall back in love.  RSVP at: [email protected]

BASEBALL’S FIRST PERFECT GAME took place on this day in 1880.  Lee Richmond (National League Worcester Ruby Legs) pitched baseball’s first perfect game, meaning he did not allow a single opposing player to reach first base, against the Cleveland Indians.

ANNE FRANK WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1929.  Frank was born in Frankfurt, Germany, and moved to Amsterdam to escapes the Nazis.  She eventually had to go into hiding.  Frank is most known for her diary that she started in 1942.  She died at a concentration camp in 1945.

TODAY IS NATIONAL JERKY DAY.  The holiday is sponsored by the Wisconsin Beef Council and is meant to commemorate the benefits of dried meat snacks.

TODAY IS RUSSIA DAY.  The national holiday celebrated in Russia recognizes when the First Congress of People’s Deputies of the Russian Federation adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty.

THE “TEAR DOWN THIS WALL” speech occurred on this day in 1987 by former U.S. President Ronald Reagan.  Reagan was referring to the Berlin Wall, when he challenged former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev to give liberalization in the Eastern Bloc.

ON THIS DAY IN 1902, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Brooklyn Inspectors Confer with Partridge.”
The article refers to a police conference that took place at that time.  
“The topic of most interest in local police headquarters this morning was the summons of the inspectors to Mulberry Street,” the article wrote.  “Deputy Commissioner Ebstein said that he had not been notified to attend.”
