Good morning. Today is the 170th day of the year. It is the birth anniversary of Brooklyn-born comedian Moe Hurwitz (Howard) of the Three Stooges. Moe grew up in Bensonhurst with his brothers Sam (Shemp) and Jerry (Curly), who were also in the Stooges, although the three brothers were never all in the group at the same time.

In 1925, after getting married, Moe took a hiatus from the comedy trio, borrowed some money and built four houses in Bath Beach. Unfortunately, he couldn’t sell or rent the houses, went bankrupt, and soon went back on stage with his partners. During this period, Moe also taught acting at the Jewish Community House in Bensonhurst. In the early 1930s, the Stooges moved to Hollywood.

Well-known people who were born today include singer-dancer Paula Abdul, actress Poppy Montgomery (“Without a Trace”), actress Phylicia Rashad (“the Cosby Show”) and author Salman Rushdie (“The Satanic Verses”).
