ON THIS DATE IN 1900, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Roosevelt May Suspend the Mayor at Once.”  The article refers to New York City Mayor Robert Anderson Van Wyck.  There was a pending investigation at the time of a charge of the mayor sharing in profits on the Ice Trust, referring to the Ice Trust Scandal that eventually destroyed his career.  The article quotes: “…If the Mayor should refuse to reply to questions concerning his dealings with the ice trust, the Governor could accept that as an evidence of guilt upon his part and remove him.”
