Good morning. Today is the 157th day of the year. The June 6, 1901, issue of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, carried a story about Justice William Gaynor’s (later Mayor William Gaynor) ruling that the Brooklyn Heights Railroad Company, a trolley company, could legally charge 10 cents a ride. At the time, most of the city’s trolleys and elevated lines charged a fare of 5 cents, as would the subway system when it opened three years later.

Well-known people who were born today include actress Sandra Bernhard (“The King of Comedy”), Hall of Fame tennis player Bjorn Borg, saxophone player Kenny G, children’s rights activist Marian Wright Edelman and Brooklyn-born actor-playwright Harvey Firestein.
