The June 6, 1901, issue of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, carried a story about Justice William Gaynor’s (later Mayor William Gaynor) ruling that the Brooklyn Heights Railroad Company, a trolley company, could legally charge 10 cents a ride. At the time, most of the city’s trolleys and elevated lines charged a fare of 5 cents, as would the subway system when it opened three years later.
