Brooklyn Today for March 12

Brooklyn Daily Eagle

Good morning. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of March 12, 1842, reported that “The Long Island Rail Road Company has opened up another section of their road to a new place called Deer Park, the next point after the Babylon station, about 41 miles from Brooklyn.” At that time, most Long Island Rail Road trains departed from a Brooklyn terminal on Atlantic Avenue between Clinton and Henry streets. This was before the famous tunnel under Atlantic Avenue, used by the railroad between 1844 and 1864, was built.

Well-known people who were born today include playwright Edward Albee, actress Barbara Feldon (“Get Smart”), singer Marlon Jackson of the Jackson 5, singer-songwriter Al Jarreau, singer-actress Liza Minelli (“Cabaret,” “The Sterile Cuckoo,” “Arthur”), former presidential candidate Mitt Romney, former baseball player Darryl Strawberry and singer-songwriter James Taylor (“Sweet Baby James,” “You’ve Got a Friend”).
