Good morning. Today is the 73rd day of the year. On this day in 1911, L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Church of Scientology, was born in Telden, Neb. Hubbard, a World War II veteran, was first known as a writer of science fiction and fantasy stories. In 1950, he published Dianetics, a book about a new type of therapy he had developed.
Although Dianetics was poorly received by the medical and scientific communities, it gained many adherents. The philosophy proposed in Dianetics evolved into Scientology, and in 1953 Hubbard incorporated the Church of Scientology. In the 1970s, in the face of an increasing number of legal challenges, he became a recluse. Hubbard died in 1986.
