Good morning. Today is the 87th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of March 28, 1902, reported that some “strange men” had been going around to Catholic neighborhoods in Brooklyn, selling people prayers that were not sanctioned by the church. As soon as they found out about this, parish priests warned their congregants that it was not the practice of the Catholic Church to sell prayers, and that these “prayers” were bogus. The Eagle also reported that the “fakers” were most successful in poor immigrant neighborhoods such as Carroll Gardens, where many recent Italian immigrants lived.

Well-known people who were born today include singer Reba McIntyre, singer Lady Gaga, actress Dianne Wiest (“Law & Order,” “Hannah and Her Sisters,” “Bullets Over Broadway”), basketball coach Byron Scott and actor Ken Howard (“Crossing Jordan,” “The White Shadow”).
