A PARENT FORUM TITLED RESOURCES FOR IMMIGRANT FAMILIES is being held at 5:30 p.m. today at the Brooklyn Public Library Bushwick branch.
The forum is meant to be a source for bilingual parents and will focus on English language learners programs, free homework help and tips for parent-teacher conferences.

A PROCLAMATION ISSUING AMNESTY FOR SOUTHERN REBELS was delivered by President Andrew Johnson on this day in 1865.  
At the time, once an oath of allegiance was taken, all property rights (excluding slaves) were returned to all participants in the rebellion.

ASCENSION DAY is recognized on this date, referring to Christ’s ascension into heaven 40 days after the Resurrection (Easter is counted as first day).  This date has been recognized since AD 68.  In Belguim, the PROCESSION OF THE HOLY BLOOD correlates with Ascension Day.  The Procession recalls crusaders who carried back relics of the Holy Blood.

JOHN F. KENNEDY was born on this day in 1917.  
Kennedy was the 35th president of the United States as well as the youngest president ever elected.  He was assassinated while riding in an open limousine at Dallas, Texas.

“AIN’T I A WOMAN” SPEECH BY SOJOURNER TRUTH took place at the Women’s Rights Convention on this day in 1851.
The convention took place in Akron, Ohio.  Sojourner was a former slave, and her speech is named after the impassioned refrain: “I have ploughed, and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And ain’t I a woman? … ”

ON THIS DAY IN 1899 the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article on acres being secured for an additional park at Coney Island.
“A number of the city officials believe that the park scheme is a good one,” the article said.  “The idea has already received attention in the local church world two religious bodies having formally indorsed the plan yesterday.”
