He died on Dec. 25, 2006, in Atlanta.

Well-known people who were born today include TV personality Greg Gumbel, singer Engelbert Humperdinck, folk singer Pete Seeger ("Where Have All the Flowers Gone"), singer Frankie Valli of the Four Seasons ("Sherry," "Walk Like a Man," "Big Girls Don’t Cry") and U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon).
