Good morning. Today is the 150th day of the year. On this day in 1851, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle ran an article on the Census of 1850 (obviously, news traveled slower then than it does today). Among other things, the Eagle revealed that the population of the U.S. had grown from 3.9 million in the days of the American Revolution to more than 23 million in 1850.

Of particular interest was the Eagle’s contention that population was growing much faster in the free states above the Mason-Dixon line than in the slave states. The Eagle confidently predicted that the free states would soon politically overwhelm the slave states, but it didn’t turn out that way.

Well-known people who were born today include singer-rapper Cee Lo Green, baseball player Manny Ramirez, actor Clint Walker (“The Dirty Dozen”), singer Synona Judd and actor Ted KcGinley.
