Good morning. Today is the 126th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of May 6, 1902, reported that “the battle of the ash barrels is being fought all over Brooklyn.” These barrels were filled not only with ashes, but with paper.

“We have tried,” said Superintendent Clark of the city’s Street Cleaning Department, “to induce homeowners to tie up their waste paper and keep it inside until the arrival of the trash car. When a citizen fills up a barrel full of waste paper and puts in on the curb, he shows that he desires to get rid of the paper as well as the paper inside.” Apparently, some homeowners felt that the street cleaners should be emptying the barrels, but returning the empty containers to their owners.

Well-known people who were born today include TV host Tom Bergeron, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, actor George Clooney (“The Descendants,” ‘Ocean’s Eleven,” “Three Kings”), Hall of Fame baseball player Willie Mays, signer-musician Bob Seger (“Old Time Rock and Roll”) and Brooklyn-born actress Gabourey Sidibe (“Push,” “The Big C”).
