Good morning. Today is the 317th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Nov. 13, 1901, reported on a baptism of nine converts in Bay Ridge by a religious leader known as Brother Sanford, who headed the Holy Ghost and Us Society. “The place selected,” reported the Eagle, “was a stretch of water at the foot of 60th Street in Bay Ridge, bleak and windy at this time of year.” After the ceremony, all proceeded to the Grand Union Hall on Court Street, where they held a service. Brother Sanford, who was based in Maine, declared himself “an ambassador to Jesus Christ.”

Well-known people who were born today include actor Gerald Butler, actress Sheila E. Frazier (“Super Fly”), comedienne-actress Whoopi Goldberg (“Ghost,” “Sister Act,” “The Color Purple”), talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, former football player Vinny Testaverde, actor Chris Noth (“Law & Order,” “”Sex and the City”) and actor Steve Zahn.
