Good morning. Today is the 285th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Oct. 11, 1899, reported on the efforts of a “Dr. Wiley,” described as the chief chemist of the Department of Agriculture in Washington, to determine, through experiments, whether horsemeat is as edible to humans as beef. Wiley dismissed the “popular prejudice” against horsemeat as food as “not well founded.” Obviously, Dr. Wiley’s efforts did not catch on, at least not in the United States.

Well-known people who were born today include actress Joan Cusack, singer Daryl Hall of Hall and Oates, baseball player Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez, actor Luke Perry and Brooklyn-born physician Robert Gale, co-founder of the International Bone Marrow Registry.
