Brooklyn Today for Oct. 12, 2012
Good morning. Today is the 286th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Oct. 12, 1902, reported that Bernard Duffy of Greenpoint sued the Brooklyn Heights Railroad Company, one of several trolley companies in the borough, for assault. Apparently, Duffy changed from one streetcar to another near St. Marks Place in Park Slope. He told the conductor he had a transfer, but the conductor refused to take it. When he protested, the conductor and another man who identified himself as an inspector started beating him.
Well-known people who were born today include singer Susan Anton, actor Carlos Bernard, comedian Dick Gregory, actor Hugh Jackman, sportscaster and former baseball player Tony Kubek, and Jean Nidetch, the Brooklyn-born founder of Weight Watchers.
