Brooklyn Today for Oct. 17
Good morning. Today is the 290th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Oct. 17, 1901, reported that a “syndicate of capitalists and yachtsmen” had bought 175 acres in Gravesend. Their aim, according to the Eagle, was “to transform the meadows opposite Coney Island into the largest yacht basin in the world.” Sail-making and related shops, the article continued, would provide at least 150 jobs. Needless to say, these plans never came to fruition.
Well-known people who were born today include actress Margot Kidder (“Superman”), actor Michael McKean, rapper Eminem and actor George Wendt (“Cheers”).
