Brooklyn Today: Oct. 19, 2012

Good morning. Today is the 293rd day of year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Oct. 19, 1900, reported that after the Associated Cycling Clubs of Brooklyn denounced the idea of women bicycling for long distances, the District Attorney’s Office of Nassau County visited a hotel in Lynbrook, Long Island, where Marguerite Gast was staying overnight, and asked her to end her competitive ride. At the time, she had been cycling for 12 days. She charged that the Brooklyn organization opposed her merely because she rode for a competing organization, the Century Road Club.

Well-known people who were born today include boxer Evander Holyfield, feminist Patricia Ireland, illustrator Peter Max and actor Michael Gambon (“The Singing Detective”).
