Brooklyn Today for October 1
Good morning. Today is the 284th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Oct. 1, 1899, carried an advertisement from J. Conklin and Sons, a Brooklyn high-end retailer. Advertised were “rich black silks,” “colored novelty silks,” plaids, broadcloths, camel hair fabric and “the latest McCall’s patterns for 10 and 15 cents.”
Well-known people who were born today include singer-actress Julie Andrews (“Mary Poppins”), Hall of Fame baseball player Rod Carew, former President Jimmy Carter, former baseball player Mark McGwire and actor Randy Quaid (“Brokeback Mountain,” “Independence Day”).
