Good morning. Today is the 284th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Oct. 11, 1902, reported that James Lynch, a “respected resident of the Eastern District,” had shot a man whom he believed had “led his daughter astray.” The victim was described as a proprietor of a Raines Law hotel, meaning a saloon with several rooms above it (which allowed the saloon to legally serve drinks on Sunday). Rooms in such hotels were usually used by either prostitutes or unmarried couples. Since Lynch’s daughter was allegedly to be living at the hotel, it is likely that the proprietor had convinced the daughter to lead a life of prostitution.

Well-known people who were born today include singer Daryl Hall of Hall and Oates, actor David Morse, Sen. Patty Murray (D-Washington), actor Luke Perry (“Beverly Hills 90210”) and Hall of Fame football player Steve Young.
