Good morning. Today is the 275th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Oct. 3, 1900, carried a story about 20-year-old Alice Hill, a stenographer for Dow Jones who lived on Nostrand Avenue. She fell in love with a young physician, Dr. Harry Hill of DeGraw Street, but he rebuffed her advances. In desperation, she purchased a bottle of liquid opium (which was then readily available in drugstores), drank a large dose, then went to Dr. Hill’s office and declared that she was killing herself because of him. Dr. Hill saved her life, but we don’t know whether he ever returned her affections.

Well-known people who were born today include singer Chubby Checker (“The Twist,” “Let’s Twist Again”), Hall of Fame baseball player Dennis Eckersley, singer-songwriter Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac and Hall of Fame baseball player Dave Winfield.
