Good morning. Today is the 263rd day of the year. Did you know that at one time, it was illegal to open a store on Sunday? The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Sept. 20, 1901, reported that 50 grocers in the “Eastern District” (East Williamsburg and Bushwick) were arraigned in court and charged with violating the Sunday ban on commerce. It was estimated that nearly 500 grocers in the borough were guilty of “Sunday closing violations.”

Well-known people who were born today include Hall of Fame hockey player Guy LaFleur, actress Anne Meara (“Fame”) and actress Sophia Loren (“Black Orchid,” ‘Marriage Italian Style”).
