Good morning. Today is the 267th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for Sept. 24, 1864, carried a preview article about an exhibit of flowers and plants sponsored by the Brooklyn Horticultural Society at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). This wasn’t the BAM we know today – it was BAM’s earlier building on Montague Street, which was later destroyed in a fire. The event also featured a concert to raise funds for the widows and orphans of soldiers who had died in battle during the Civil War, which was still raging at the time. Finally, the article mentioned the annual fee for membership in the Brooklyn Horticultural Society – three dollars.

Well-known people who were born today include actor Gordon Clapp (“NYPD Blue”), singer Kreayshawn, screenwriter-actress Nia Vardalos (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding”) and former baseball player Rafael Palmeiro.
