Good morning. Today is the 270th day of the year. The entire front page of the Sept. 26, 1901, Brooklyn Daily Eagle was taken up by news of the America’s Cup yacht race. Those were the days when wealthy men like J. Pierrepont Morgan and John Jacob Astor would show off their yachts in these races, and the public avidly followed these races.

Well-known people who were born today include singer Lynn Anderson (“I Never Promised You a Rose Garden”), signer Olivia Newton-John, tennis player Serena Williams and Arizona Governor Jan Brewer.

Today is Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, the day when Jews repent for their sins and seek forgiveness for those whom they have wronged. All synagogues in Brooklyn are having services today. The holiday ends with the blowing of the ram’s horn, or shofar.
