Good morning. Today is the 249th day of the year. Political deals involving a Kings County Democratic leader are nothing new, at least not if you look at the Brooklyn Daily Eagle from Sept. 5, 1900. According to the article, a “long and earnest discussion” took place at an auction room, of all places, between former state Sen. Edward Murphy, representing Manhattan Democratic Boss Richard Croker, and Hugh McLaughlin, then the Brooklyn Democratic leader. The topic was apparently who to run as Democratic candidate for governor, but neither pol was talking.

Well-known people who were born today include actor-director Dennis Dugan, cartoonist Cathy Lee Guisewite (“Cathy”), actress Carol Lawrence (“West Side Story’), comedian Bob Newhart (“The Bob Newhart Show”) and actress Raquel Welch.

Today at 3 p.m., Brooklyn College President Karen Gould will officially open the college’s new athletic field. The field, which replaces a field that was built in 1937 and overhauled in 1975, meets NCAA regulations for soccer and football, and will provide a home for the college’s soccer and football teams.
