Brooklyn Today: Thursday, March 15, 2012
Good morning. Today is the 75th day of the year. It is the birth anniversary (1767) of Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the United States. Jackson first became popular as a general during the War of 1812 and was considered an advocate for the common man. He opposed a central bank because it gave too much power to wealthy industrialists, and he expanded voting rights to include poor whites as well as property owners. His benevolence did not extend to Native Americans, however, and he was responsible for the forced expulsion of several tribes from the Southeast.
Well-known people who were born today include actor Judd Hirsch (“Taxi”), singer Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), singer-musician Sly Stone (Sly and the Family Stone) and Brooklyn-born U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
