Brooklyn Daily Eagle
Good morning. Today is the 340th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Dec. 5, 1902, reported on the first big winter storm of the season. The Brooklyn Bridge and the borough’s trolley and elevated lines were blocked because of the snow (subways were still a few years away), and the Brooklyn Bureau of Charities struggled to get coal and wood to the poor for heating. At the time, gas stoves were still a fairly recent invention, and not everybody had them, especially the poor.
Well-known people who were born today include actress Margaret Cho, author Joan Didion ("The Year of Magical Thinking," "The White Album"), Hall of Fame football player Art Monk, author Calvin Trillin (“American Stories,” “Remembering Denny”), singer “Little Richard” Penniman (“Long Tall Sally,” “Tutti Frutti,” “Rip It Up”) and folksinger Chad Mitchell.
