Brooklyn Today: Wednesday, March 21, 2012

Good morning. Today is the 81st day of the year. On this day in 1940, soul and R&B singer Solomon Burke, who appeared as part of the MetroTech concert series in Brooklyn several years ago, was born in Philadelphia. Although he was not as successful as more flamboyant singers such as James Brown and Jackie Wilson, he had a stream of steady sellers on the R&B charts, such as “Cry to Me” and “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love.” He was more than 400 pounds at the time of his death in 2010, and had to sit on a throne onstage.

Well-known people who were born today include actor Al Freeman, actress Rosie O’Connell and actor Matthew Broderick (Inspector Gadget, Godzilla, The Producers).
