The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce will host its 2013 Annual Gala on Dec. 18 at El Caribe Country Club in Mill Basin.

The event will honor Borough President Marty Markowitz and former Chamber Board Chair Phil Stenger in a night in which the Brooklyn Chamber will be “Celebrating the Legends of Brooklyn.”

“We are truly honored to be ‘Celebrating the Legends of Brooklyn’ at this year’s Winter Gala,” said Carlo A. Scissura, president and CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. “My former boss, Borough President Marty Markowitz, has made enormous contributions to Brooklyn over his 12 years at Borough Hall and his years in the state Senate. He truly is responsible for the ‘Brooklyn Renaissance’ and a major factor in why the borough is the hottest place on the planet to live, work and play.

“Our former Board Chair Phil Stenger — known as the ‘Dean of the Brooklyn Bankers’ — has been a tireless champion for the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and the borough’s business community over the decades. He has been a mentor and teacher to many in the banking community and someone who has dedicated himself to philanthropy.

“These men truly are legends. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to honor both men and finally give them the public thank you they deserve.”

Current Chamber Board Chair Denise Arbesu said, “I have had the privilege of working with these two Brooklyn leaders, Marty Markowitz and Philip Stenger, for many years. I have no doubt that because of Marty’s leadership, Brooklyn has been catapulted into the renaissance we are now experiencing which we all will be benefiting from for many years to come.

“It has been people like Phil Stenger, who for over 50 years has given of his time, experience and knowledge by leading and mentoring various organizations in our community to achieve greatness” who has also influenced and guided many generations of bankers and business people, she said.

“Both Marty and Phil define leadership, they are special people, and we love them dearly.”
