The Game of Kings was a popular entertainment on Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights on Sunday for the first of two Summer Space events sponsored by the Montague Street BID. Chess tables and demonstrations were provided by the educational organization New York Chess & Games, courtesy of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.
“Chess improves analytic skills and can lead to direct improvement in math and science as students learn about causality,” said Asandoh Jones, an instructor with New York Chess & Games. Teaching intern Phillip James added, “Chess teaches students patience, to think twice before acting, and self control.”
Other activities on the street included well-attended opera performances by The Martha Cardona Theater, yoga and Zumba, craft demonstrations by Etsy and games for kids.
Chess aficionado (and Brooklyn Eagle mascot) Eddie the Eagle will take on New York Chess & Games chess master Christian Whitted at the next (and final) Summer Space event on September 23. The Brooklyn Heights Dog Show will also take place on the 23rd.
