Bay Ridge — Edmund Moderacki, a World War II veteran who served as chairman of the Bay Ridge Community Council’s Veterans Affairs Committee, died Jan. 24 after a long illness. He was 90 years old.

Mr. Moderacki served for many years on the community council. In addition to his role as the head of the Veterans Affairs Committee, he also chaired the Senior Issues Committee.

Mr. Moderacki was also active in senior issues in the neighborhood, serving as president of the Bay Ridge chapter of the AARP for a time and serving on the advisory board of the Bay Ridge Center for Older Adults. He participated each year in Miles For Meals, a walk-a-thon held to raise money for the senior center’s Meals On Wheels program.

For his volunteer work, Mr. Moderacki received the community council’s highest honor, the Civic Award, in 2010. That same year, he was honored by the New York State Senate, which passed a resolution praising him and his dedication to the community. The resolution was sponsored by state Sen. Marty Golden.

The community council issued a statement praising Mr. Moderacki for his hard work and dedication to Bay Ridge.

“Ed spent many years in the BRCC heading up the Senior and Veterans Affairs committees. He was a constant source of information and worked passionately for the good of all he served. The council is glad to have honored him with the Civic Award in 2010 for all he has done inside and outside the council. He was a great man who did many great things and will be greatly missed by all who knew him,” the statement read.

Mr. Moderacki, who was a lifelong resident of Bay Ridge, was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, in the Pacific, in World War II. Following the war, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering from New York Polytechnic University. He went on to earn a Master’s Degree in ocean engineering from Long Island University.

He worked for many years for the Sperry Rand Corporation until his retirement.

Mr. Moderacki belonged to several organizations, including the Interagency Council on the Aging, the American Legion, the American Heritage Club, and the Bay Ridge Sesquicentennial Committee.

He was also a member of religious fraternal organizations, including the Saint Anselm Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus, and the Polish Roman Catholic Union.

Ted General, a friend and colleague of Mr. Moderacki’s, said he admired him. 

“I greatly admired him as a civic leader and a good friend,” General said. 

The two men worked together on various committees, including the Bay Ridge Sesquicentennial Committee, which marked the 150th Anniversary of the naming of the community.

Mr. Moderacki was a deeply religious man, according to General. 

“He truly lived and practiced his faith. He used to go to 8 o’clock mass every morning at St. Anselm Church,” General said.

Mr. Moderacki’s wife Wanda predeceased him. He is also predeceased by two of his children, Robert and Joan.

He is survived by his son Robert Moderacki, his daughter Joan Edin, and his grandchildren Joseph, Katherine, and Peter.

A wake for Mr. Moderacki will take place on Thursday, Jan. 26, at Clavin Funeral Home, 7722 Fourth Ave., from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday, Jan. 27, at St. Anselm Church, 356 82nd St., at 9:45 a.m.
