Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-Ulster County) plans to challenge the U.S. Postal Service’s (USPS) consolidation plans that affect processing centers in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Newburgh, Buffalo and Plattsburgh. The Postal Service cited a 25 percent drop in first-class mail volume since 2006 as the reason for the consolidations, which it said would cut $3 billion in costs.
