A female pedestrian was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after she was struck by an SUV on Fourth Avenue and 82nd Street in Bay Ridge Tuesday morning, police said.

The woman, whose name and age are unknown, was crossing Fourth Avenue from east to west when she was struck by an SUV whose driver was making a right-hand turn from 82nd Street onto Fourth Avenue at approximately 11:30 a.m., Capt. Richard DiBlasio, the commanding officer of the 68th Precinct, told the Brooklyn Daily Eagle at the scene.

When asked if the driver was speeding or if the woman was crossing the street against the light, DiBlasio said “We don’t know. We’re investigating to find out what happened.” Police also did not have the identity of the victim in the immediate aftermath of the accident, DiBlasio said.

The NYPD Highway Unit had a team of investigators at the scene looking for tire tracks and other bits of information. Police closed off a two-block section of Fourth Avenue, from 81st Street to 83rd Street to vehicular traffic in order to give investigators enough room to conduct their probe of the accident.

Councilman Vincent Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) was also at the scene, having spotted the police cars and yellow tape blocking off the avenue while on his way to an appointment. Gentile said he was told that the victim was in “very bad shape” and that she had been rushed by ambulance to Lutheran Medical Center. “She apparently hit her head hard on the pavement when she was hit by the car,” Gentile said.

Local residents stood on the sidewalk watching the police investigation. Many were shaking their heads. “This street is terrible,” one woman said. “The cars do U-turns all the time. You have to be so careful crossing the street,” she said.

More details on the accident will be provided as they become available.
