ALBANY— Gov. Andrew Cuomo supports the minority position of his own tax commission when it comes to providing a property tax credit to renters in New York City.

He would include renters in his property tax-cutting plan along with owners and strike a political balance that could get his proposal through the Legislature.

Cuomo’s tax commission supported his goal of reducing property taxes upstate and in the New York City suburbs, where residents pay some of the nation’s highest taxes.

On Monday, Cuomo voiced his strongest support yet for a renters’ tax break as well. But he said it’s too early to say how much of a benefit renters could see.

It would apparently be a tax credit provided directly to renters.
