Edible Schoolyard NYC, an organization that integrates seasonal and healthy gardening and cooking into schools’ curricula, has designated P.S. 216, the Arturo Toscanini School in Gravesend, as one of its “showcase schools.” In October 2010, it transformed a former parking lot at P.S. 216 into a half-acre urban garden and began teaching garden classes to all 550 students, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Now, Edible Schoolyard will break ground at P.S. 216 for a state-of-the-art greenhouse and kitchen classroom.
