For Brooklynites looking to escape, there’s the quintessential celebration of American agriculture — the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. Fair attendees will get an early glimpse of new Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan today, as he visits voters for the first time alone on the trail. On opening day, Iowa’s 2012 Pork Princess, Sterling Schnepf, pretends to kiss Reggie, the champion “Big Boar” from Austin, Indiana as her sister, Paris Schnepf, the 2011 Iowa State Fair Queen, looks on. But pig enthusiasts beware: Hundreds of new swine flu cases were reported throughout the country last week.
