Honor organist Hugh Manley Knight, who has served as organist of St. Philip’s Episcopal Churchin Bedford-Stuyvesant for 45 years, will be honored at his retirement this Saturday, Sept. 15.

Health fair promotion

Interfaith Medical Center sent a chaplain last weekend to churches around Bed-Stuyvesant to publicize the hospital’s Health Fair.

Serving Central Brooklyn, including Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights, Interfaith Medical Center is the result of a merger between Jewish Hospital and St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. The organization is considered Central Brooklyn’s community hospital, and a majority of the patients served are Caribbean-American and African-American.

The Health Fair, on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will offer free screenings, as well as kids’ activities: prizes and free surprises, face painting, hot dogs and ice cream. Interfaith Medical Center is at 1545 Atlantic Ave.

Choir recruits

St. Augustine, a 4th-Century C.E. saint and Doctor of the Church famed for his “Confessions” and “The City of God,” said, “He who sings prays twice.” As choir seasons start up this fall, Sacred Hearts and St. Stephen’s Church seeks new choir members.

Choir director Evelyn Troester, a conductor, voice teacher and performer, begins rehearsals on Wednesday, Sept. 19. According to a flyer published in the parish’s weekly bulletin, “This group of supportive, encouraging and talented singers will welcome newcomers and help you to feel right at home. Enjoy the benefits of good singing, which deepens your breathing, improves the function of the lungs, reduces stress, lifts the spirit, helps you connect with your faith and your community, enhances the worship here at church and is simply just a lot of fun.”

Interested singers are encouraged to visit the choir’s website Choir.DelVecchioRC.com and speak with Music Director/Organist Jim Lake. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m.

Jim Lake was also the featured trumpeter in “Heroic Flourishes for Organ, Brass & Percussion” last spring at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn Heights. Lake and his colleagues in the Arcadia Brass Ensemble joined organist Gregory Eaton on the St. Ann’s Landmark 1925 E. M. Skinner pipe organ.
