Praising Sara Gonzalez as someone who “has been by our side every step of the way, fighting to keep firehouses open,” leaders of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association announced their endorsement of the councilwoman for another term in office.

Gonzalez (D-Sunset Park-Red Hook) stood with the union’s leaders in front of Engine 201 at 5113 Fourth Ave. in Sunset Park on May 1 to accept the endorsement. The councilwoman is running for her third, and final, term in office.

The Uniformed Fire Officers Association (UFOA) represents over 2,500 active, and over 4,500 retired lieutenants, captains, battalion chiefs, deputy chiefs, supervising fire marshals, and medical officers.

“The Councilwoman understands the sacrifices our members make on a daily basis, and that we must have access to the resources necessary to do our jobs safely and effectively,” UFOA President Al Hagan said. “She is committed to protecting the pensions and health benefits of public employees. She will continue to be a strong voice for public safety, and the needs of fire officers in the City Council,” he said.

Gonzalez said the backing of the UFOA in her re-election bid meant a great deal to her. “I am so grateful to have the support of such dedicated, hard-working, and brave public servants. There’s no two ways about it, UFOA members are heroes who put their lives at risk to keep you safe,” she said

“I look forward to continuing to work with UFOA to keep firehouses open, ensure that their members have access to top of the line equipment, improved working conditions, and the pensions they deserve.”

Gonzalez, who was first elected in 2001, would be the City Council’s senior member if she wins in November.
