Fifth Ave. Business Spotlight: Sisters Celebrate Fourth Year at Long’s

BAY RIDGE — Long’s Wines & Liquors is a long-established Bay Ridge business whose newest owner, Heather Hamilton, is celebrating four years of proprietorship this month.

The continued success of the shop is due not only to Hamilton’s wise business sense, a skill she developed while working in theater production in the city (and with national touring companies) for many years, but also to her sister Shasta’s excellent management of the shop. The two sisters run Long’s Wines & Liquors with a sense of adventure, a generous spirit of welcome, and a love of wine.

The store endeavors to work with the individual palates of its customers. The owners believe in wine enjoyment as much as wine education. The staff is helpful and informed, yet unpretentious, about their stock. If you aren’t sure what to buy, just let the folks in the shop know what you might have liked recently and what you plan to enjoy with it.

As a sign of their local and community commitment, they also highlight New York wineries and distilleries. Given the international tapestry that is Brooklyn, they also stock wine from all over the globe, but have a particularly strong selection of Greek wines, given the local interest.  

“Greek wine has really come into its own,” Heather explained, adding, “I like to think about wine as a mini trip without the airport.”

Long’s will do special orders for unusual requests and carries everything from wine in boxes to high-end reserve bottles. The store offers discounts for orders on cases of wines — 17% off, which is equivalent to getting two bottles for free! Long’s also offers discounts of 10% on six or more bottles of spirits. There is a $20 minimum for local delivery, or $100 minimum for delivery anywhere in Brooklyn. The staff will also happily design and deliver gift baskets for holidays or other special occasions.

Email the shop to be put on its distribution list for special promotions, coupons and sales. Stop by to learn about wines at weekly tastings, held on Fridays and Saturdays. You can even think about branching out from your usual whiskey selection through the shop’s annual St. Patrick’s Whiskey Tasting, which features rare and delectable Irish selections that are available at the shop.
