The Sears Roebuck Department Store on Beverly Road in Flatbush is now an official city landmark. The Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday extended its protection to the 80-year-old Art Deco-style structure with a conspicuous 10-story tower that displays the store’s name in large capital letters on all four sides. The opening ceremony, on Nov. 5, 1932, featured an address by New York State’s first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. She is said to have made the store’s first purchase, a pair of baby booties.
