Hurricane Sandy forced the postponement of the Brooklyn Catholic Diocese junior varsity volleyball championship tournament but the super-storm didn’t put a damper on the games.

The team from Fontbonne Hall Academy defeated the team from Archbishop Molloy High School 2 games to 1 in the finals, which were played at Archbishop Molloy last month.

“The playoffs were postponed because of the hurricane. The hurricane hit our students and faculty hard,” said publicity director Juliette Tugander. More than 70 families whose daughters attend Fontbonne Hall Academy were left homeless by the hurricane. Several of the school’s students live in the Rockaways and Breezy Point, two of the hardest hit communities.

The JV volleyball team was not immune to the suffering brought on by Hurricane Sandy. Ten out of 11 team members lost their homes in the super-storm. So did coach Linda Strong. The team members were asked if they wanted to go ahead with the playoffs and the answer was an overwhelming yes, according to school officials.

The result was a championship.
