There were so many students to be inducted into the National Honor Society at Fontbonne Hall Academy, it wouldn't have been a surprise if the school had run out of citations!

But happily, that didn’t happen as there were plenty of accolades to go around at the all-girls Catholic high school in Bay Ridge, where 40 students were inducted into the Mother St. John Fontbonne Chapter of the National Honor Society last month.

The National Honor Society recognizes students who excel in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character. The society also considers teacher evaluations in the decision to accept a student.

The induction ceremony was held in the gymnasium at Fontbonne Hall, located on Shore Road and 99th Street. The gym was filled with teachers, families of students and friends. All of the girls inducted into the society at the recent ceremony are juniors who will graduate from Fontbonne Hall in 2015.

Laura Izzo, a 2007 graduate of Fontbonne Hall, who is pursuing a career in dentistry, was the guest speaker. She urged the new inductees to be true to the values of the National Honor Society as they move on to college and careers.

Mary Ann Spicijaric, Fontbonne’s principal, described the commitment by her students to academic excellence and service to others as being unique in today's society. "These women who sit in front of me right now are countercultural," she said. "We are honored and happy to have them be a part of our student body.  We are thrilled to have them serve as role models for all of our students."

Spicijaric also announced that the senior class at Fontbonne has earned over $10 million in scholarships.

During the school year, the members of the National Honor Society participate in various service projects such as peer tutoring. The girls also conduct a Christmas toy drive each year.
