GO: Gigantic art show to take over Brooklyn September 8-9

It seems like everything in Brooklyn is big nowadays, and the art weekend coming up September 8-9 is no exception.

On this weekend, thousands of art fans will be visiting the studios of more than 1,800 artists across 45 Brooklyn neighborhoods, viewing work from paintings to sculptures to all kinds of mixed media in its natural environment.

The artists will be in their studios and will discuss their work with visitors on both days from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

The open studio weekend — called “GO See Art in Brooklyn” — is sponsored by the Brooklyn Museum. In an interesting twist, visitors can nominate their favorite pieces — using text messaging, a mobile app, or the GO mobile website — for a December exhibition at the museum.

The ten artists with the most nominations will receive studio visits from Brooklyn Museum curators. Two of them will be chosen to have their work displayed during Target First Saturday on December 1.

You don’t need a mobile device to visit studios, however. Just grab a map booklet and start your journey, or visit www.gobrooklynart.org to create an itinerary.

Award-winning sculptor Robin Antar from Midwood, known for her massive stone sculptures of everyday objects — a pair of Diesel jeans, an 800 pound bag of M & M’s — is one of the participating artists.

“At any given time you can walk by my home and see thousands of pounds of rock in my outdoor garage, and watch me as I chip away with my tools,” she told show coordinators.
