Community Board 10 and members of the Xaverian High School Robotics Team are working together to organize an Electronics Recycling event for southern Brooklyn residents who want to get rid of old computers, monitors, fax machines and other dinosaurs of the digital age.

The recycling event will take place on Saturday, April 6, in the parking lot of Xaverian High School, located on Narrows Avenue between 71st and 72nd Streets, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Residents can bring all sorts of items to be recycled, including scanners, printers, DVD players, phones, answering machines, microwaves, loose batteries, even refrigerators and air conditioners. Cable television and satellite receivers will also be accepted.

The items will be donated to Vanguard Environmental Consulting Inc., a Brooklyn-based recycling company. The company will send representatives to the fair to pick up the items.

“We’re excited about the event this year,” said Josephine Beckmann, district manager of Community Board 10. “We’re happy to be working with the Xaverian Robotics Team. They’re a great bunch of young people,” she told the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

The team members work together to build robots, which are then entered into robotics competitions with other high schools.

The recycling event has been successful in past years, according to Beckmann. “We had the last one about 18 months ago. A lot of people came. People brought old air conditioners. And we saw a lot of old television sets,” she said.

“I’m cleaning out my closets!” Beckmann said, adding that she plans to bring her old electronic items to the recycling fair.

The parking lot is large enough to accommodate a big crowd, Beckmann said.

The Robotics Team is also holding a fundraiser at the event. The students are accepting donations of old ink cartridges, which will be sold to raise money.
