Was there a bathroom sex romp, or is the story an untrue allegation that is part of a Democratic-led smear campaign designed to embarrass an elected official?

US Rep. Michael Grimm angrily denied a report that he had sex with a woman in the bathroom of a Bay Ridge bar two weeks ago.

“This never happened,” said Grimm, in a statement released by his office. Grimm (R-C-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Staten Island) charged that the allegations of a bathroom tryst are an attempt by Democrats to smear him.

Despite Grimm’s denial, however, the story exploded all over the Internet on Tuesday and was picked up by several news organizations, including the New York Daily News, the New York Post, and the Staten Island Advance.

The story, first reported by Brooklyn Magazine, stated that Grimm, 43, disappeared into a unisex bathroom at the Owl’s Head with his date and that the two of them were in the rest room for so long, more than 15 minutes, that other patrons suspected they were having sex.

The bathroom tryst allegedly took place on the night of Sept. 27, the Friday before the federal government shutdown.

The bar in question, the Owl’s Head, at 479 74th St., is a hipster place located within Grimm’s congressional district.

In the article, Brooklyn Magazine quotes anonymous sources who were inside the Owl’s Head Bar at the time and who told the magazine the congressman’s behavior raised a lot of eyebrows.

Grimm and his companion, described in various media reports as an old friend, were sharing a table in the Owl’s Head Bar with two other couples.

A friend of the congressman’s told the Staten Island Advance that the lawmaker’s date was visibly upset about a personal matter and that Grimm went into the bathroom after her to make sure she was all right.

In addition to denying that he used the bar’s bathroom as a bedroom, Grimm also claimed that he is the victim of a smear campaign.

“I will not dignify this absurd distortion of the facts with a response, except to say that this is nothing more than a typical Democrat-led smear campaign,” Grimm stated.

Grimm, who is single, is a retired FBI agent and a US Marine who fought in Operation Desert Storm 22 years ago. He was first elected to congress in 2010. He was re-elected in 2012 and is expected to run for another term in office in 2014.

Councilman Domenic Recchia (D-Coney Island-Gravesend-Bensonhurst) has already announced that he will challenge Grimm for the Brooklyn-Staten Island congressional seat next year.
