Gun-toting man nabbed in Red Hook

Friday the 13th was an unlucky day for a man who allegedly tried to walk around with a semi-automatic weapon in his waistband in Red Hook.

Slightly before 1 a.m., according to police reports, members of the Police Service Area No. 1 Anti-Crime Unit saw a man with a firearm in his waistband walking toward a deli near Mill and Hicks streets, Red Hook.

As the officers approached, the man with the gun fled toward the nearby Red Hook Houses, according to police reports. The officers pursued the suspect, and he, in turn, fired once at them.

The officers were able to apprehend the 20-year-old man, whose name was not given, and take him into custody. The firearm, a fully loaded .45 caliber Smith and Wesson semi-automatic handgun, was recovered at the scene.
