KIRYAS JOEL, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 10-year-old Brooklyn boy who went missing for about 15 hours in a Hasidic Jewish community in upstate New York has been found safe.
The Times Herald-Record of Middletown reports that public safety officials in the village of Kiryas Joel say the boy was found around 9:15 a.m. Monday near a girls' school, not far from the neighborhood where he had last been seen around 6 p.m. Sunday.
Officials say the boy, who has Down syndrome, seemed to be in good health but was checked out at a hospital.
He had been visiting his grandparents in Kiryas Joel about 50 miles north of New York City. Incorporated in 1977 by members of the Satmar Hasidic sect from Brooklyn, it has about 23,000 residents.
